Allergy Testing and Treatment

Allergy Testing and Treatment

There are many types of allergies, and they can affect you seasonally or all year long. No matter what type of allergies you suffer from, your allergist can help you get relief.

What You Need To Know About Allergies and Allergy Treatment

Allergy testing can vary, depending on the type of allergies you have. Consider these types of allergies and their testing methods:

Seasonal allergies, commonly occurring during the spring and summer months. If you suffer from seasonal allergies, you may be allergic to plant and flower pollens, trees and grasses, weeds, and other outdoor irritants. Testing for seasonal allergies is typically performed with a skin test, during which a small amount of allergen is injected just underneath the skin.

Environmental allergies, which can occur all year long, because the allergen is often inside the house. If you suffer from environmental allergies, you may be allergic to pet dander, dust, mold, and other indoor irritants. Testing for environmental allergies is also typically performed with skin testing.

Food allergies, which can occur when you ingest a food. If you suffer from food allergies, you may be allergic to seafood, dairy, gluten, or peanuts. Testing for food allergies is typically performed with a challenge test, during which you ingest a small amount of allergen and are observed for a reaction. Blood tests may also be used if there is concern about ingesting a food allergen.

Your allergist may recommend a variety of methods to treat your allergies. Common treatments include:

  • Allergy injections
  • Sublingual immunotherapy
  • Prescription-strength decongestants and antihistamines

If your allergies result in breathing difficulties, including asthma, your allergist may also recommend:

  • Short-term rescue inhalers for acute symptoms
  • Long-term control medications to manage chronic symptoms

Environmental modifications are also an important part of allergy treatment and management. You should:

  • Vacuum frequently, or consider switching to solid flooring
  • Dust frequently, and wear a mask while dusting
  • Use hypoallergenic pillowcases and sheets
  • Change your pillow frequently
  • Keep pets out of the bedroom and off of furniture
  • Install an air filter in your home, especially the bedroom
